Holding Pattern

We're now at 15 days "past due" and everything still is looking good. When you get this far into a pregnancy, though, even midwives start stepping up the testing just to be on the safe side.

Here's some technical information, for those who are interested:

As I mentioned last time, we had a biophysical profile taken, which is an ultrasound that looks for 8 different things, some of which include:

health of the placenta
amniotic fluid levels
fetal breathing
fetal heart tones
fetal activity
fetal size (ruling out growth restriction, for example*)

The result from this test was an 8 out of 8, so everything that test could measure looks perfect. Interestingly, my placenta looks so healthy that they postdated me at 40 weeks gestation instead of the 42 that are consistent with all the other ultrasounds and calculations. This might mean that I have a longer gestation cycle than the 40-week medical "norm," and the placenta is working according to my clock.

The only thing that's causing some concern right now is that I've got elevated blood pressure and swelling, both signs of pregnancy-induced hypertension. It's not enough to cause alarm -- especially when every other test looks perfect -- but just to be sure, they're running some detailed labs over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, I'm still feeling good and staying active, but I have officially given Mr. Monkey his eviction notice. It's time!
