Bebé Enrique had a lot to smile about today! After six days on IV dextrose to treat his low blood sugar, it was finally tapered down to nothing as his blood sugar levels have been holding steady and he's been eating more vigorously. Also, his platelet count, which was disconcertingly low several days ago, has been climbing steadily, giving his doctor one less thing to worry about. He still has the feeding tube in place in case he isn't up to drinking his milk requirements on his own, but it's only been used once in the last 24 hours -- a major improvement. He has also made it a couple of days without the need for supplemental oxygen.
Every day finds Emil Enrique a little bit more unplugged, and today was no exception. He had the IV line in his foot removed, which he was very happy about. The precise terms haven't been set for his release, but basically they're looking for him to eat enough on his own to keep his blood sugar levels up. All in all, it was a great day and every few minutes I caught him grinning away. Needless to say, mamá was all smiles, too.
